The story moves from the Brooklyn side of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to the Staten Island side. Tony's friends talk about how their lives in New York are idyllic, and how they would never move to Staten Island. To them, the people living on Staten Island are poor, uneducated, and unsophisticated.
The father's newfound ambition leads to a fall from grace for Tony. His friends steal his girlfriend and his girlfriend's parents take her to Italy, where she would be safe from the brutal life of the streets. While the girlfriend is away, Tony's friends learn that he has been seeing a girl in Bay Ridge. They let Tony know that they don't like his new girlfriend and that they think he should be dating them all. The next day, Tony's friends throw him out of his Brooklyn apartment. Tony then moves in with his girlfriend's parents, hoping to make them change their minds and move the girl back to their home.
The opening of the film is a sign of things to come as Tony Manero becomes a symbol of the good life for the masses. As a teenager, he is living with his parents in a cold, dark, and depressed Brooklyn. His father is a mousy man who works as a window washer. His mother, with her colorful sixties style, drives a cab. Neither man nor woman has much in the way of friends and they seem to dislike the world about them. When Tony falls in love with an African American woman, her parents are not happy with the relationship and make it clear to Tony and the girl that they won't welcome her visits to their home. Tony and his girlfriend have no place to go and, after a brief separation, a party given by Tony's parents convinces him to stay in Brooklyn and find work to help support his girlfriend and himself.
Tony's father is a window washer. He is paid by the number of windows he can clean. To get enough money, he has to clean as many windows as he can in one day. This means he must work all night, and in many cases, all day as well. As the father-son friendship between Tony and his father grows, the father becomes more and more unhappy with his life as a window washer and convinces his son that he should go to work for better money as a cook.
