Yoo and his team call their innovation the invisibility carpet. It is made of a material called amorphous silicon -- a light-weight, thin film that is one-atom thick. Yoo is concerned that conventional carpets absorb moisture -- which can have a negative effect on a carpet's lifespan -- and are hard to clean. Thus, to make an invisible carpet practical, it needs to be thin and be able to be cleaned regularly.
This invisibility-cloaking device is a new type of space-disguising carpet that can make any flat surface seem to be a bumpy rug. The invisibility-cloaking carpet is based on an original concept of Cornell University professor Tae Yoo, who invented the concept of cloaking devices for stealth fighter aircraft. Yoo and his colleagues -- including doctoral student Jihyun Kim, associate professor of mechanical engineering Min-Ho Lee, and graduate student Hyeon-Woo Lee -- have developed an array of ultrathin air pressure sensors that can be placed in a conventional plush carpet. These sensors can sense the presence of a bump on a flat surface even when the carpet is positioned on top of a bump, making it seem as if there is no bump present.
The carpet is made of a thin, transparent air film, 15 micrometers thick. It has a density of roughly one-thousandth that of air and weighs less than one-hundredth of a pound. This enables it to be invisible even on a bumpy surface. The researchers did additional research showing that the thin air film can be bent, rolled, and folded without breaking.
