How to prevent slow sql query from executing in SQL Server

I have a stored procedure on SQL Server which executes query like:

SELECT * FROM table WHERE TableID = '1'

And this query takes from 2 second (2 seconds is too long) to more than 6 minutes to return result.

Can i prevent execution of the query so that it will not stop the server?

There are two things you can do here to improve performance:

Make sure the table has an index on TableID. This will help SQL Server find the information it needs quickly. Make sure there is a covering index on your table that includes all the columns necessary to join the table.
