Mating Humans In Bed Videos |VERIFIED|

Our study is limited by using videos of only one human. We chose to show the videos of one individual in order to provide a more objective approach than to show videos of the individual chimpanzee being acted upon. However, this approach does have limitations. It may have been more revealing had we chosen a human who interacted with the chimpanzees more actively. Unfortunately, our data cannot distinguish between (a) humans who understand the rules of the game and play by them and/or (b) humans who do not understand the rules of the game and interact with the chimpanzees in ways that are not consistent with the rules. In contrast, when we showed video clips of a chimpanzee feeding a gelada in the wild, most of the chimpanzees at the park reacted with a range of behaviors, including yawning and grooming (not shown). The feeding of wild chimpanzees and humans has been shown to be more contagious than both the feeding of tame chimpanzees and the feeding of mice, suggesting that wildness can be a factor in the contagiousness of yawning [6]. Whether the partner is wild or tame is an important factor in the contagiousness of yawning.
There are a number of limitations in this study. The sample size is small and it is not possible to determine whether the same pattern would have emerged in larger samples. The video camera was fixed and the videos were shot from a fixed angle. We wished to minimise any bias caused by moving the camera or changing the angle, so we used a fixed position in which the camera could not see the other chimpanzees. However, it is possible that the chimpanzees could have seen the other chimpanzees and taken this into account when watching the video. However, the chimpanzees are unlikely to have been influenced by subtle changes in the position of the camera, as this would have affected the behaviour of all chimpanzees equally. The yawning was the only activity we measured and the subject of the study. It is known that chimpanzees yawn in response to other yawns [50], but we did not ask them to do so and did not test whether they yawned in response to a third party’s yawn. We were interested in the contagious nature of yawning and did not specifically test whether the chimpanzees showed empathy [50, 51]. Finally, we did not test the chimpanzees on any other activities, such as grooming, that could have interfered with our results.
