The reason we're here today is to talk about Time Crisis 4, which incidentally, was a pre-order game for the PlayStation 3. First up, the obvious: there's an Xbox 360 port on the way, which is due out at the end of November. Time Crisis 4 isn't cheap at £19.99, but considering that the 360 version is priced £14.99, and because it's a completely different game that was never released on PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Portable, it seems like a fair deal. There's also a PlayStation 3 Game of the Year Edition available, which adds in the training missions, a full set of extra challenges as well as two playable characters from the original Time Crisis. The DLC also includes a new multiplayer mode, Time Crisis Battle, which lets you battle against friends on a two-player split-screen or Online via PlayStation Network. As mentioned above, Time Crisis 4 is also set for release on PlayStation Move at the end of the month. It might be the first game ever to be released on PlayStation Move, but it's a pretty awful implementation; it would have been much better to wait for Move to actually become a full motion controller, something we're still waiting for over a year later.
The PS3 Game of the Year edition would have been a much better version of the game, with some of the games added in as extra unlockable content. It would have been nice to have seen that, at least. Then again, we don't know anything about what's going to happen to the PS3 version, given that it was a pre-order. It could end up becoming a Game of the Year edition, or it could be canned entirely if the Xbox 360 version does well. As things stand, it's not looking likely that the PS3 version will be released at all. That would be a shame. Time Crisis 4 was such a fun game to play; it was a blast to pick up and play, and while the PS3 version isn't as good as the Xbox 360 one, it's not that far off. If you've played Time Crisis 4 on Xbox 360 or PlayStation Portable, you won't find much of a difference on the PS3, but things like in-game music, enemies and cutscenes all seem to be recorded at a lower quality on the PS3. The graphics are also less detailed than on the Xbox 360, though the lighting and particle effects are much better.
Mixed - Light gun games on the PC seem to have lost something of their charm. They've become a bit of an old man's game, with Wii controllers and motion controls making this kind of game much more attractive to younger gamers. Unfortunately for Namco, the light-gun game is already a dead genre in the west. Namco's Time Crisis 4 feels like an awkward last-ditch attempt to try and bring this genre to life, but ultimately it's just too heavy-handed.
Time Crisis 4 is a game that straddles the line between being a light gun game, and a free-form, first-person shooter. It's a bit of a mess and it's really not a game that you'd want to spend any significant amount of time with.
The game's new vehicle combat is a little more difficult to get used to, and it's not a patch on Time Crisis 4's vehicular combat from the previous games. It's a shame, because it's a nice way to add a bit of variety to the gameplay. Unfortunately, the game's new control scheme is a bit clunky and it gets in the way. 827ec27edc
