Debonair's first issue was published in August 1979. It was a men's magazine published by the Be Debonair Foundation (BDF), with advertising revenue. The magazine included articles on a range of topics - from politics to current events to films, cars, and music. By the time it was discontinued, the magazine was India's most-read men's magazine. It was modeled after Playboy and was published monthly between August 1979 and January 1993.[8]
The magazine was started by the Indian businessman Ashok Row Kavi and Anthony Van Braband, who were also the co-owners of Simplex Air, a low cost airline.[9] In 1988, the magazine's publisher, the Be Debonair Foundation (BDF), and others were sued by the parents of the three children who had died in the Air India Flight 182 bombing.[10][11] The lawsuit was settled and the family received $8.5 million. As part of the settlement, the BDF was also barred from publishing any men's magazine for a year.[12]
In 1986, Debonair produced the film, Mr. India, for which the lead role was played by Raj Kapoor. The film was directed by Vijay Bhatt. The scenes were shot at Darya Studios, Mumbai. Kapoor, who played a Rajput chieftain, also played the lead role in his other film, Mera Naam Joker (1980).[13]
The magazine was revived in 2005 by the Be Debonair Foundation. It is a monthly men's magazine for the over-18 crowd. It is a tabloid-sized magazine and is targeted at the 18-35 age group. It re-ignited the popularity of the magazine, with new readers discovering it for the first time. The magazine was indexed by The Indian Express in November 2006.[14]
The first issue of the magazine was published on 3 August 2005.[1] The target readership of the magazine was derived by asking the readers to complete a questionnaire that listed the most common words used by Debonair readers. The magazine is published by the Be Debonair Foundation, a non-profit organisation of the same name, which was founded in 1991 by Raj Kapoor and Anthony Van Braband. The magazine was named after the mother of the Rajput chieftain, who was a great lover of horses.
